Coast Improv
Coast Improv is a Sunshine Coast improvisation community founded in March 2024 by Alistair Cook, a veteran improv teacher and tournament director with decades of experience across North America, Europe, and Australia. The company offers drop-in workshops, monthly intro-to-improv sessions, and ensemble performances, all provided free of charge as a barrier-free model.
History
Founding (March 2024)
Alistair Cook founded Coast Improv on the Sunshine Coast, Queensland in March 2024. Cook had moved to the Sunshine Coast in 2021 after decades leading improv tournaments and classes across North America, Europe, and Australia. His past students include actor and producer Seth Rogen, and he is known as "The Evangelist" by the board of the Canadian Improv Games for his work promoting spontaneous comedy.
Cook was inspired to start the company by a conversation on a school playground, where other parents mentioned they were travelling to Vancouver specifically to access Theatresports-style improv training. This exchange prompted him to create local access to the art form.
Free-of-Charge Model
Coast Improv provides all three of its offering types at no charge: drop-in workshops, monthly intro sessions, and ensemble performances. This barrier-free approach is unusual among Australian improv organisations and reflects Cook's goal of making improv accessible to the Sunshine Coast community.
Artistic Identity
Coast Improv brings experienced international improv leadership to the Sunshine Coast under a free-of-charge community model, founded in March 2024 by Alistair Cook.
