ComedySportz Milwaukee is the original ComedySportz venue, founded by Dick Chudnow in Milwaukee, Wisconsin in September 1984. As the first company in what became the CSz Worldwide franchise network, it launched the competitive short-form format that spread to approximately twenty-four cities across the United States and United Kingdom. ComedySportz Milwaukee continues to perform regularly at its home venue in Milwaukee.

History

Founding (1984)

Dick Chudnow, together with Karen Kolberg, Bob Orvis, and Brian Green, founded ComedySportz Milwaukee in September 1984, presenting the inaugural show at Kalt's (Henry Kalt's Green Room). Chudnow adapted Keith Johnstone's Theatresports competitive format into a sports-themed improv show with referee, team competition, and audience scoring. The format was designed to make improvisation accessible to Milwaukee audiences unfamiliar with the art form.

First Franchise and Growth (1985–1990s)

The immediate success of the Milwaukee company led to the first franchise opening in Madison, Wisconsin in 1985. Through the 1980s and 1990s, the franchise grew to encompass cities across the United States. In 1988, the Comedy League of America Tournament gathered ten teams, with Milwaukee winning the first World Championship. Milwaukee has continued to host and participate in the annual World Championship tournament.

Ongoing Operations

ComedySportz Milwaukee remains an active performing venue, offering regular shows of the competitive short-form format it originated. As the founding company, it holds a distinctive place in the broader CSz Worldwide network.

Artistic Identity

As the originating company, ComedySportz Milwaukee presents the competitive short-form format Chudnow developed from Theatresports: two teams compete in improv games before a referee, with audience members judging each round. The sports metaphor (uniforms, referee, scorekeeping, fouls for "dirty" jokes) was designed to reduce barriers for audiences unfamiliar with improvisation by framing the performance within familiar sporting conventions.
