Complot Escena is an independent, multidisciplinary theatre company founded in Mexico City in 2000 by UNAM graduates including general director Omar Medina, that treats theatrical improvisation as a serious art form rather than merely an actor-training tool. The company is known internationally for its signature show Impro Lucha, a format blending improvisation with Mexican lucha libre wrestling and live music. It organised three consecutive editions of the International Theatrical Improvisation Festival Impromitótl México in 2011, 2012, and 2014.
History
Complot Escena was founded in 2000 by a group of UNAM theatre graduates, with Omar Medina serving as general director. The company developed its work across text-based drama and theatrical improvisation, with the improv strand becoming its primary international identity. Impromitótl México 2011 and 2012 established Complot Escena as the leading organiser of international improv exchange in Mexico, bringing companies from Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Spain, France, Peru, Puerto Rico, and Mexico. A third festival edition followed in 2014. The company was invited to perform at the Bogotá Ibero-American Theater Festival, one of Latin America's most prestigious international theatre gatherings.
Artistic Identity
Complot Escena's artistic philosophy positions improvisation as a complete performance discipline in which the actor functions simultaneously as performer, playwright, and director. Impro Lucha embodies this approach by fusing luchador narrative drama, live musicianship, and fully improvised dialogue into a single theatrical event that draws on distinctly Mexican popular culture. The company's work sits at the intersection of sport theatre, multidisciplinary performance, and the Latin American short-form competitive tradition.
