Det Andre Teatret (The Other Theatre) is Oslo's dedicated improvisational theatre, opened in September 2011 as the first improv-focused venue in Norway. Operating from a converted space near the Aker River, the company runs more than eight shows per week with an ensemble of approximately twenty performers, touring nationally and internationally.

History

The theatre was initiated in 2008 by a group of improvisers from Teater Liksom, who identified a need for a permanent home for improv in Oslo. After years of community fundraising and volunteer labour, they converted a former coconut mill along the Aker River into a functioning performance venue, opening in September 2011. Founders include Mats Eldøen, Nils Petter Mørland, Tony Totino, and Veslemøy Mørkrid. The company has received support from Norwegian state and municipal cultural funding programs and expanded its international profile through festival touring, reaching cities including Gothenburg, Helsinki, Berlin, Amsterdam, and Toronto. In September 2016, to mark its fifth anniversary, the theatre hosted Den Andre Teaterfestivalen, its first international festival, presenting ten groups in both scripted and unscripted work.

Artistic Identity

Det Andre Teatret centres its work on acting craft, storytelling, and a self-described 'risk-loving' approach to performance, producing original improvised work for adult and children's audiences. The company maintains an actor-run, actor-funded model and balances a high-volume weekly performance schedule with school touring and festival participation.

Legacy

Det Andre Teatret holds the distinction of being Norway's first and, for many years, only venue dedicated to improvisational theatre, establishing Oslo as a recognized node in the European improv circuit and providing infrastructure that enabled the country's subsequent improv community growth.
