Gotham City Improv

Years Active1987 – 2015
Location48 West 21st Street, Chelsea, New York, NY

Gotham City Improv was a New York City improv school and performance company founded in 1987 by Hilaury Stern, initially as 'Groundlings East,' a New York affiliate of the Los Angeles-based Groundlings. The company became independent in 1988 and renamed itself Gotham City Improv, operating a character-based curriculum and performance programme at 21-A Clinton Street on the Lower East Side until its closure approximately 2015.

History

Founding as Groundlings East (1987)

In 1987, members of The Groundlings in Los Angeles established a New York affiliate under Hilaury Stern, a Groundlings instructor, along with several Groundlings writers and performers. Initially operating as 'Groundlings East,' the company brought the character-based improv methodology developed in Los Angeles to New York City.

Independence and Renaming (1988)

In 1988, the company separated from The Groundlings and became an independent organisation, renaming itself Gotham City Improv. Operating from 21-A Clinton Street on the Lower East Side, it developed a training curriculum across four levels and expanded to include sketch writing and musical improv. Corporate team-building workshops became a significant part of the company's programming.

Closure (c.2015)

Gotham City Improv closed approximately 2015. It had served as New York's primary home for the Groundlings-derived character-based improv tradition before Improvolution (founded 2002) carried forward a similar approach.

Artistic Identity

Gotham City Improv was grounded in the character-based, game-centred methodology of The Groundlings: improvisers developed strong individual characters with a distinctive point of view, then found games within scenes through heightening. This stood in contrast to the Harold-centred tradition of Chicago-trained NYC venues. Gotham positioned itself as the New York outpost of the Los Angeles improvisational tradition until its closure.
