Impromptu Teatro
Impromptu Teatro is the oldest theatrical improvisation company in Costa Rica, founded in April 2006, with performances at festivals across more than twelve countries and as organiser of the Festival Internacional de Impro Costa Rica.
History
Impromptu Teatro was founded in San Jose in April 2006 by director Javier Monge and actor-improviser Rolando Salas, becoming Costa Rica's first professional theatrical improvisation company. The founders built an organisation that extended well beyond the national market, performing at festivals in more than twelve countries across Latin America and Europe over subsequent years. The company also took on the role of organising the Festival Internacional de Impro Costa Rica, creating an institutional framework for international improv exchange in Central America.
Artistic Identity
Impromptu Teatro combines professional performance with festival organisation, using both to position Costa Rica within the international improv circuit rather than operating as a purely domestic company.
Legacy
As Costa Rica's founding improv company, Impromptu Teatro established the form as a professional practice in Central America and created the Festival Internacional de Impro as a continuing vehicle for international exchange.
