Berlin-based improv training organisation founded in 2013 as Instant Theatre and later rebranded ImprovWorks Berlin, offering weekly 8-week course cycles culminating in class showcases and corporate team-building workshops.
History
The organisation was founded in Berlin in 2013 under the name Instant Theatre (also marketed as Instant Improv Berlin) and subsequently rebranded as ImprovWorks Berlin. Summer A. Banks became the primary instructor; she had begun improvising in 2009 with ComedySportz (later ComedyShorts) Berlin, subsequently trained at Second City's summer institute in Chicago, and worked with instructors including Tim Orr and Joe Bill.
Alongside her work at ImprovWorks, Banks founded the Berlin English Improv Network (a listings platform for English-language improv in Berlin) and co-founded Rollercoasters, described as Berlin's first improvised musical ensemble. Classes are held at Haus Zwingli in Friedrichshain. The organisation has trained thousands of students through its 8-week course format.
Artistic Identity
ImprovWorks Berlin emphasises psychological safety as foundational to creative performance, describing itself as offering a "fun and nurturing environment." Training follows the North American long-form tradition through structured 8-week cycles, each ending in a class showcase for family and friends. Programs include improv, stand-up comedy, and acting. Corporate workshops apply improv methodology to team communication and creativity.
The organisation maintains an explicit equity and diversity commitment. Its training community has been a hub for Berlin's English-speaking improv scene.
