Salt City Improv Theatre
Salt City Improv Theatre is a Syracuse, New York improv organization founded in 2010. The company operated from a space in Shoppingtown Mall in DeWitt, New York presenting improv, sketch, and stand-up alongside classes. The Shoppingtown Mall location closed permanently in 2020 when the mall shut during the COVID-19 pandemic, but the organization continued operating online and at festivals. A new physical venue opened in Oneida, New York in 2025.
History
Founding and Mall Venue (2010)
Salt City Improv Theatre was founded in 2010 and established its performance home in Shoppingtown Mall at 3649 Erie Boulevard East in DeWitt, near Syracuse, occupying a space between the Sears and Dick's Sporting Goods wings. The venue presented improv, sketch, and stand-up alongside a class program.
Pandemic Venue Loss and Continuation (2020)
When Shoppingtown Mall permanently closed during the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020, Salt City Improv Theatre lost its physical home. The organization continued programming online and performed at festivals during the intervening years.
Oneida Venue (2025)
In 2025 Salt City Improv Theatre opened a new physical venue in Oneida, New York, within driving distance of Syracuse, Rome, and Utica, resuming in-person operations.
Artistic Identity
Salt City Improv Theatre serves the Central New York region with improv, sketch, and stand-up comedy programming, persisting through the loss of its original mall venue to reestablish a physical home in the Syracuse area.
