Second City Hollywood
Second City Hollywood was the Los Angeles training centre of The Second City, operating at 6560 Hollywood Boulevard from 2005 until its closure in October 2022. A training-centre satellite rather than a full resident company in the Chicago or Toronto model, it offered courses in improv, sketch, musical comedy, writing, and stand-up in a 49-seat theatre with additional classroom spaces.
History
Opening (2005)
The Second City opened its Hollywood training centre at 6560 Hollywood Boulevard in 2005 as part of the organisation's geographic expansion. The location operated as a training-focused satellite rather than a full resident producing company: it offered a conservatory curriculum and a range of short-form courses but did not maintain a resident ensemble performing a continuous revue in the manner of The Second City in Chicago or Toronto. Joshua Funk served as Artistic Director.
Operation and Programming
Second City Hollywood offered programmes across improv, improv intensives, sketch comedy, musical improv, long-form improv, comedy writing, writing for television and film, stand-up, storytelling, and children's programming including summer camp. The 49-seat theatre presented student and faculty showcases alongside corporate programmes.
Closure (2022)
Second City Hollywood closed in October 2022. In June 2023, The Second City announced that it would no longer seek a brick-and-mortar presence in Los Angeles.
Artistic Identity
Second City Hollywood operated in the institutional tradition of The Second City's training system: a structured, level-based curriculum producing graduates eligible for house ensemble participation and conservatory-level study. As a training centre without a resident producing company, the Hollywood location did not develop the revue pipeline that characterises Second City's flagship locations. Its programming breadth (improv, writing, stand-up, musical, children) reflected a broader comedy education model rather than the focused revue pathway of the parent institution.
