Station Theater
Station Theater is a Houston, Texas independent comedy hub founded in 2011 as the Houston chapter of Austin's The New Movement, rebranding as Station Theater in fall 2012. Operating at 2000 Nance Street, the company grew from two weekly shows to six, hosting the Houston Improv Festival and College Improv Tournament while developing a conservatory, applied improv program, and stand-up programming.
History
Origins as New Movement Houston (2011)
Station Theater grew out of the Houston chapter of Austin's The New Movement, which began offering improv classes around 2011 under Shyla Ray, drawing from Houston troupes Massive Improv and Rogue Improv. The group separated amicably from the parent New Movement organization in fall 2012 and rebranded as Station Theater to establish a distinctly Houston identity.
Houston Avenue Era and Festivals
The company moved into a historic Art Moderne building (the former Knapp Chevrolet / Texas Art Asylum) on Houston Avenue and grew from two weekly shows to six. Station Theater established the Houston Improv Festival and hosted the College Improv Tournament, positioning itself as the anchor of Houston's independent comedy ecosystem.
Relocations and Ongoing Operations
After the Houston Avenue building was sold in late 2021, Station Theater relocated to Sawyer Heights before settling at a custom-built space at 2000 Nance Street. The company continues to offer long-form improv, sketch, stand-up, a conservatory program, and applied/corporate improv work.
Artistic Identity
Station Theater presents long-form improv, sketch, and stand-up with a conservatory curriculum and applied improv program. The company's identity as Houston's independent comedy hub reflects its commitment to building local comedy infrastructure through festivals, class programming, and corporate improv alongside its theatrical performance schedule.
