Hamburg-based professional improv ensemble founded by Thorsten Brand in 1992, one of Germany's earliest and longest-running improvisational theatre companies. The organisation encompasses stage theatre, a structured training school, an International Impro Academy, and a business theatre institute.
History
Thorsten Brand founded Steife Brise in a basement theatre (Kellertheater) in Hamburg in 1992, making it one of the earliest dedicated improv ensembles in Germany. Brand co-directs the company alongside Torsten Voller. The ensemble grew over its first decade from an informal stage group to a 20-member company of performers, trainers, consultants, and musicians.
In 2009, the company launched "Improkrimi : Morden im Norden," a crime improvisation format performed at the Imperial Theater Hamburg. A maritime show, "Seemannsgarn : Bis sich die Balken biegen," premiered in 2013 aboard the museum ship Cap San Diego, adding a site-specific format to their repertoire.
In 2017, for their 25th anniversary, Steife Brise launched TÖRN, the first international improv festival in Hamburg, presenting 13 improvised theatre formats from companies around the world over five days from March 29 to April 2.
Over three decades, the company expanded from stage performance into a structured school, a professional Masterclass program, and a business theatre operation serving corporate clients across Europe.
Artistic Identity
Steife Brise performs short-form, long-form, and genre-specific improvisation, including musical formats and cross-genre collaborations with poetry slam. Their flagship show "Improshow : Die Spontane Breitseite" has run continuously since 1992. The company performs at multiple Hamburg stages and has toured internationally.
The training school uses a six-level classification system drawn from the Beaufort wind scale ("Windstärken"), grading students from complete beginners through professional performers. The International Impro Academy offers advanced workshops with English-language visiting faculty, primarily in English, serving an international student base.

Legacy
Steife Brise helped establish Hamburg as one of Germany's primary improv scenes. Their 1992 founding predates most professional German improv companies, and the ensemble trained generations of improvisers through their school and Masterclass program. The TÖRN festival, launched in 2017, created Hamburg's first international improv festival platform.
