The Assembly Improv South Africa is a Gauteng-based company founded by performer and educator Paul Rabenowitz, launched with its first public show on 6 March 2021 as a branch of the internationally franchised Assembly organisation originating in Toronto. The company focuses on long-form, game-based improvisation and aims to build a community of comedians and writers in Johannesburg. Its inaugural performance was broadcast live via streaming, featuring performers with credits on Brooklyn 99, Broad City, and Netflix productions.

History

Paul Rabenowitz discovered improvisation through studying comedy and recognising its centrality to the careers of many screen performers he admired. He travelled to Canada in early 2020 to meet the Assembly's global community before the COVID-19 pandemic interrupted physical programming. The Assembly itself originated in the basement of a Shoppers Drug Mart in Toronto and subsequently expanded internationally to Mexico City, Amsterdam, and Gauteng. The South African launch show on 6 March 2021, held virtually due to pandemic restrictions, featured international guests. Rabenowitz brought 25 years of teaching experience across classical guitar, fencing, and financial planning to the company's educational design.

Artistic Identity

The Assembly Improv South Africa is built around the long-form, game-based philosophy of the global Assembly network, placing emphasis on sustained narrative scenes rather than competitive short-form games. The company's programming includes multilingual and culturally inclusive formats, including silent improv and Babel Improv, intended to reflect the linguistic diversity of South Africa's audience and performer community.
