The Courtyard Playhouse is Dubai's first dedicated improv theatre and the UAE's only KHDA-licensed performing arts training center focused on improvisation, founded in 2013 by Kemsley Dickinson and Tiffany Schultz in the Al Quoz warehouse district. The venue is the home of Theatresports Middle East, affiliated with the International Theatresports Institute, and its curriculum is grounded in Keith Johnstone's methodology. Corporate training clients have included Audi, Van Cleef and Arpels, and PricewaterhouseCoopers.

History

Kemsley Dickinson began teaching acting in Dubai in February 2008 with the Desert Monologues Acting Workshop for Adults; the success and growth of that initiative over five years led to the formal opening of The Courtyard Playhouse in 2013, supported by David and Susan Dickinson and a partnership with Richard and Louisa Coates. The original space, one of the first warehouses in Al Quoz, was redesigned progressively as the organization grew. By 2018 the facility had expanded from its original 70-seat auditorium to include a 40-seat studio, a workshop space, and a rehearsal room. The Playhouse's improv programme earned international recognition, partly through several instructors who trained directly with Keith Johnstone. It became the hub of Theatresports activity in the Middle East through its ITI affiliation and holds two improv and comedy showcases per week.

Artistic Identity

The Courtyard Playhouse is ideologically committed to Keith Johnstone's approach to improvisation, with its entire curriculum rooted in his principles and many instructors holding direct training lineage to Johnstone himself. The dual mandate of performance and corporate training reflects Johnstone's own applied dimension, translating the lessons of Impro for Storytellers into professional development contexts. As the regional home of Theatresports, the Playhouse occupies a formal position within the global ITI network and brings competitive improv formats to Gulf audiences.

Legacy

The Courtyard Playhouse established a permanent home for improv in Dubai and became the institutional anchor for Theatresports in the Middle East, affiliating the Gulf region with the global ITI network through which Keith Johnstone's competitive formats are maintained. Its KHDA licensing and corporate client roster anchored improv as a legitimate professional development tool in the regional business community.
