The Hysterical was founded in Chennai in 2022 by Shalini Vijayakumar, who had previously performed with The Half-Boiled Inc., one of the city's established improv companies. By creating an all-woman ensemble, Vijayakumar addressed a gender gap in Chennai's improv scene and built a space dedicated to female voices in a format that had historically been dominated by mixed or male-led groups. The company was active as a performing ensemble from its founding year.
