LocationMumbai, India

The Improv is a live improvisational comedy show and company conceptualised and hosted by filmmaker Saad Khan, launched under his Centerstage banner in Bangalore on 6 May 2012 and subsequently touring to Mumbai, Hyderabad, Chennai, and international dates. The show has performed over 100 times across India, the UAE, and Sweden, and has featured performers including Darius Sunawala, Danish Sait, Sumukhi Suresh, Kanan Gill, and Radhika Vaz.

History

Centerstage, Saad Khan's media company, launched The Improv in Bangalore in May 2012 with a founding cast including Sal Yusuf, Darius Sunawala, Abel Mathews, and Tim Schultz. The show quickly expanded to other Indian cities and by April 2014 had performed its first overseas show in the UAE. In 2016 The Improv was selected for the International Improv Festival in Uppsala, Sweden, marking the production's first European appearance. Over successive years the performer roster broadened to include many of India's most prominent stand-up and improv comedians on a show-by-show basis, making The Improv a recurring platform rather than a fixed ensemble.

Artistic Identity

The Improv centres on short-form improv games and audience-driven scene structures, incorporating rounds the company calls Freeze, Switch, and Rotate alongside open suggestion formats. The show combines acting, spontaneity, audience banter, and live improvised comedy into a format designed for large venue audiences rather than intimate theatre settings. Khan's background as a film director shapes the show's emphasis on narrative momentum and character commitment within each scene.
