Whose Line PE

LocationGqeberha (Port Elizabeth), Eastern Cape, South Africa

Whose Line PE is an improv comedy group based in Port Elizabeth, now officially known as Gqeberha, in the Eastern Cape province of South Africa. The group takes its name and short-form format from the internationally recognised Whose Line Is It Anyway? television series format, with audience members setting the scenes for performers. It operates as one of the few improv comedy companies outside the Cape Town and Johannesburg scenes.

History

Whose Line PE developed within the Port Elizabeth / Gqeberha comedy community as a locally organised group, filling a gap in live unscripted comedy in the Eastern Cape. The city, renamed Gqeberha in 2021 from its colonial-era name Port Elizabeth, has a smaller arts infrastructure than Cape Town or Johannesburg, making locally organised improv groups particularly significant for community cultural life. The group maintains a Facebook presence as its primary public-facing platform, consistent with smaller regional improv organisations across South Africa.

Artistic Identity

Whose Line PE draws on the short-form game tradition, presenting audience-driven scenes and comedy formats in a style recognisable from the internationally broadcast television series that shares its name. The group's identity is rooted in its role as a live, community-accessible entertainment option in a city where professional comedy infrastructure is limited.
